The American Tactical GSG-9 is a blowback-operated 9mm Luger pistol built around a 7.9-inch barrel and a compact, PDW-style layout with a blued finish. Pistol-caliber pistols in this format have become popular for home defense and range use because they deliver a longer sight radius and more velocity than a handgun while remaining far more maneuverable than a rifle.

The straight-blowback action keeps the design simple and durable, and the platform is well suited to adding an optic, light and brace or stabilizing device where legal. Feeding common, widely available 9mm makes it inexpensive to train with.
