Charles Daly's 601 is an inertia-driven semi-automatic, the same operating principle behind some of the most trusted waterfowl guns, in which a heavy bolt and spring cycle the action using recoil rather than gas. That means no gas ports to foul, easy cleaning and reliable cycling with heavy 3-inch loads. This Field version wears TrueTimber DRT camouflage on the synthetic stock and forend for early-season timber and flooded fields, with a 28-inch barrel that swings smoothly on decoying ducks and passing geese. Interchangeable chokes let it double as a turkey, dove or clays gun. It is a sound choice for a hunter who wants a soft-shooting autoloader that will run hard all season.
