This is the working version of Savage's A17: a heavy 22-inch barrel in a black synthetic sporter stock, chambered in .17 HMR. The heavy contour matters for a varmint rifle, since the barrel stays steadier through a string of shots on a prairie dog town than a sporter profile would. The A17's delayed-blowback action is the engineering that makes a reliable .17 HMR semi-auto possible in the first place.

With almost no recoil, a flat trajectory and explosive terminal effect on small game, it is a purpose-built rig for ground squirrels, rockchucks and coyotes at moderate range.
