A left-hand Savage Axis 2 Compact in .243 Winchester, with a 20-inch barrel and a grey and black finish. The Compact build shortens the length of pull and barrel to fit smaller-statured and younger shooters properly, which matters more for marksmanship than almost anything else on a first rifle.

The .243 is the classic recommendation for a new deer hunter: flat shooting, effective on deer and antelope with proper bullets, and mild enough in recoil that nobody develops a flinch. Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger is standard, and this is a true left-hand action rather than a right-hand rifle with a reversed stock.
