The Savage Axis XP in .308 Winchester is about as close to a complete deer rifle in a box as it gets: a bolt-action rifle with a scope mounted and bore-sighted from the factory, a 20-inch threaded barrel and a black synthetic stock. The .308 needs no introduction, with seven decades of proof on deer, elk, black bear and hogs and ammunition on every shelf in the country. The short barrel gives up little velocity in this cartridge and makes the rifle handy in blinds and brush, while the threaded muzzle is ready for a suppressor. Savage's button-rifled barrel and floating bolt head are why the Axis has a reputation for accuracy well beyond its class.
