Savage built the A17 specifically to handle the .17 HMR in a semi-automatic, using a delayed-blowback action rather than the straight blowback that other rimfire autoloaders use. That engineering is the whole point of the rifle, and it is what lets the .17 HMR run safely and reliably at full velocity. The Sporter dresses it in a gray laminate stock with a 22-inch barrel, giving it more heft and stability than the standard synthetic version.

With a flat trajectory out past 150 yards and very little recoil, this is a serious prairie dog, ground squirrel and coyote rifle. The AccuTrigger is user-adjustable.
