The Savage Axis II is the rifle that proved an affordable bolt gun could genuinely shoot, and the reason is the AccuTrigger: a user-adjustable trigger with a safety blade that lets you set a light, crisp pull without compromise, on an entry-level hunting rifle. The Compact version shortens the length of pull and the barrel, which makes it one of the best first deer rifles available.

Chambered in .243 Winchester with a 20-inch barrel, it pairs low recoil with plenty of authority on deer and antelope. The black metalwork and FDE stock give it a more modern look than the usual starter rifle.
